Sansepolcro, celebrating tradition with its Palio della Balestra

 Sansepolcro

Sansepolcro is a town in the eastern part of Tuscany, in the province of Arezzo, which was founded in the 11th century. Its name San(Saint)-Sepolcro(Sepulchre) derives from the tradition that two pilgrims had brought back with them a stone from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The monastery they founded became a popular pilgrimage site and grew to be known as the Abbey of Sansepolcro. Today the Gothic-Romanesque Cathedral of St John the Evangelist stands on the original site.

Cathedral of Sansepolcro

Nowadays the town is best known for its old centre with its imposing Cathedral and stately palaces, as well as for the magnificent fresco, The Resurrection, painted by Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. This masterpiece was once described by English writer Aldous Huxley as “the greatest painting in the world” a sentence which helped save the town from destruction during World War II when British Royal Horse Artillery officer Tony Clarke, who remembered Huxley’s words, arrested the Allied attack to save the fresco.

Palio della Balestra

During the Renaissance, Sansepolcro founded a Crossbowmen Society, an ancient association which since the 15th century has been able to hand down uninterruptedly the Palio della Balestra, the Crossbow Palio. The contest sees the crossbowmen of the town of Sansepolcro compete against those of the town of Gubbio from Umbria.

Palio della Balestra

It is historically documented that since 1594 there has always been a crossbow competition held by Sansepolcro and Gubbio. However, reliable sources confirm that this dispute was also held in the past and has since been held every year in Gubbio on the last Sunday of May and in Sansepolcro on the second Sunday of September.

Palio della Balestra

The Sansepolcro version includes two preceding competitions: the tournament on September 1st celebrating the town’s patron saint, Sant’Egidio, and a Palio dei Rioni which sees the two town districts, Porta Fiorentina and Porta Romana, competing against each other. The challenge held against Gubbio is set against the charming backdrop of Piazza Torre di Berta. Here in the afternoon, the archers take turns at hitting the target placed at a distance of 36 metres. The prize for the winning team was once a wool banner, today a new artist is chosen and is invited to create a new trophy every year.

Sansepolcro certainly knows how to keep its traditions alive.

Vicopisano and its Festa Medievale

Vicopisano

In the north of the province of Pisa, only 16 km (nearly 10 mi) from the Leaning Tower, lies the town of Vicopisano. It spreads between the banks of the river Arno and Mount Pisano and is mostly hilly, though reaching 530 metres with Mount Verruca.

Vicopisano, Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta

Despite its small size (26.9 km2 – 10.4 sq mi), Vicopisano has a remarkable wealth of medieval monuments. Amongst these there are twelve towers dating from the 11th to the 15th century, two 12th-century palaces, a medieval fortress designed by Brunelleschi and 12th-century Romanesque churches, just to name two out of the fifteen on the territory.

Festa Medievale di Vicopisano

The presence of this medieval heritage has brought the town since 1996 to celebrate a re-enactment  known as the Festa Medievale on every first weekend of September. In these years the festival has grown in importance, thanks above all to the happy marriage between the beautiful old town centre of Vicopisano and the efficiency of the organizers and participants in recreating the medieval milieu.

Festa Medievale di Vicopisano

Along the town streets and in the nooks leading to the peak of the hill on which Vicopisano stands dominated by the Brunelleschi Fortress, visitors will discover various inns where to try the typical frugal meals of the period together with ‘rubro’ (red) wine as well as artisans with their stalls.

05

On the square before the 14th-century Palazzo Pretorio, instead, the town holds a medieval dinner. Here it is possible to try dishes cooked according to the recipes of the time and eaten following their etiquette, namely without forks and in a sequence totally different from today’s. A lot of historical research has gone into faithfully representing these recipes popular in Italy during the Middle Ages.

Vicopisano

But beyond all this, what really strikes those visiting this Medieval Festival are the magical atmosphere and the sensation of being suspended between two worlds, present and past. A feeling the inhabitants of Vicopisano happily share with their guests. So if you’re travelling in the area of Pisa the first weekend of September don’t forget to pop over to Vicopisano and participate in its Festa Medievale.

Medievalis, when Pontremoli returns to 1226

01 MEDIEVALIS

“Duels, mysteries, love and fear at the court of Frederick II” is the slogan of this medieval event held every August in Lunigiana. Indeed, the intent is to commemorate Frederick II’s visit to Pontremoli in 1226 when he declared the town was the “clavis et ianua” (key and door) of communications between Lombardy and Tuscany, thus neatly summing up its importance during the Middle Ages.

02 MEDIEVALIS

Frederick also chartered the free municipality, turning Pontremoli into an independent commune, an important milestone for the town. Today Pontremoli celebrates this event transforming itself for four days, during which cars are banished from the old town centre and replaced with horses, carts and knights. Many more are the protagonists of this pageant representing all medieval social classes: wayfarers, merchants, priests, noblemen, soldiers and farmers.

03 MEDIEVALIS

Four days in which also the typical events of the period are re-enacted , with all the medieval vices and virtues: duels, falconry exhibitions, flag waving performances, archery feats, dancing and dinners with recipes and drinks today long forgotten.

04 MEDIEVALIS

The town also hosts a challenge known as the “Disfida della Cortina di Cazzaguerra”, a tournament held by the three historic town factions: Sommoborgo, Immoborgo and Contado. The various challenges give rise to the warlike animosity of participants which only ends with the much coveted Palio ending up in the winning quarter’s hands.

05 MEDIEVALIS

So if you’re travelling in this nook of Tuscany in August, exploring the unbeaten paths of Lunigiana, we highly recommend a visit to Pontremoli, not only for its beautiful town centre built along the river Magra and the Verde stream and for its unique museum, but also to get a bite of history during the Medievalis event.
