Casentino and its Slow Autumn

01 Casentino Forests National Park
Autumn is a season that involves many senses: hearing, enticed by animal calls, sight, captivated by the forest’s colours, and taste, tempted by the typical products of the undergrowth. For this reason the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna have organized from September 12th to November 7th a programme of events which include walking tours, excursions, labs, exhibitions, workshops, food festivals and tastings: Autunno Slow.

02 Fall foliage

Autunno Slow offers seven weeks devoted to nature within the National Park. During this period visitors can admire one of nature’s most spectacular shows: fall foliage. The fascinating chromatic progress of leaves through infinite shades of greens, yellows, oranges and reds is absolutely breathtaking.

03 Undergrowth products in the Casentino forests

All the events in programme will permit visitors to live the magic of this autumnal landscape and discover its territory, together with its cultural and gastronomic legacy. An ideal season to also learn how to ‘eat slow’, savouring the local recipes made with the typical produce of Autumn such as mushrooms, chestnuts, pumpkins, honey, raveggiolo cheese, Tuscan pecorino and many other delicious specialities.

04 Red deer

On this voyage of discovery there will be walks and bike rides at sunset to listen the red deer belling away their love, a day with the Alpine rescuers to learn safety in mountains, a tour on Dante’s footsteps through the Casentino valley, a census of the various deer types in the park and numerous other activities. Certainly a wonderful opportunity to visit this region of Tuscany and learn more about its land.

Siena’s colourful plastic invasion: Cracking Art is in town

01
On Wednesday 9th, a strange thing happened in the old town centre of Siena. About two hundred people were walking around holding frogs, meerkats, snails and swallows. This surprising, yet colourful and peaceful, invasion certainly didn’t fail to arouse curiosity and attention. One by one the 200 statues (yes, they weren’t living animals) finished their city tour and were placed in shop windows. This was the opening of “Regeneration – Cracking Art at Siena” exhibition.

02

On until October 31st, the display consists of colourful animals, made of a non-toxic regenerated polyethylene, created by an international artistic movement which has been active for over twenty years. Animals of all kinds and sizes (and colour) are placed in historical and artistic spaces, in squares and gardens, on streets, inside windows. 19 swallows can be found at the Medicean Fortress, at the San Prospero Fountain of Parco della Rimembranza and in front of the church of San Domenico.

03

The slogan of the event is: Art that regenerates. Here the contrast between the medieval setting and the modernity of the statues’ matter is high-lightened. The aim is to bring bright colours and modern art to a city like Siena. However, the exhibition also wants visitors to reflect on the protection of the environment. An ancient hub in need of constant care and a sculpture made of recycled plastic. A colourful way to remind us that we are all responsible for our legacy and for what we will pass on to future generations.

Autumn in Tuscany: grape harvesting and wine festivals

01 Tuscan wine festivals

Autumn is certainly a season full of toasting in Tuscany. September is when the grape harvesting starts in this region, this year earlier than others thanks to a very hot and dry Summer. Thus wineries open their cellars and in the town squares many bottles are uncorked. The first event to kick off the season was a very precocious Festa del Vino, Wine Festival, at Montecarlo on August 27th. Lasting until the 8th September it overlapped with lovely Pitigliano’s SettembreDiVino, DeWineSeptember, held from September 3rd to 6th. Here the wine tastings were held in the wineries dug out of tuff: unique.

02 Impruneta 2009 01

In the meanwhile, south of Florence the town of Impruneta is hosting since September 5th one of the oldest wine festivals of Italy. The Festa dell’Uva, Grape Festival, has been celebrated on these Florentine hills since 1923 and is tightly bound to folk traditions. Continuing until October 3rd, the event has a very full programme with huge cart parades, allegorical shows, folk dancing and obviously Chianti wine tastings. On Sunday 13th, after a go-kart race visitors will have the opportunity to taste the delicious Peposo, the typical Florentine peppery beef stew. Lots of other sports follow every weekend until officially the 89th edition of the Grape Festival opens on September 27th.

03 Manciano Down in Maremma, the town of Manciano is hosting its Festa delle Cantine, Wine Cellars Festival, from September 11th to 13th. The opening evening is celebrated with the traditional horseback torchlight procession, a very suggestive scene. Walking around the village, visitors will find cellars open offering a real taste of Maremma with local wine and traditional dishes such as the wild boar, the acquacotta and the pecorino cheese crêpes. Along the streets there will be stalls with local handicraft and various shows and bands playing. In the Siennese, instead, the Etruscan town of Chiusi will celebrate its Grape and Wine Festival, Festa dell’Uva e del Vino, from September 25th to 27th. On programme for this event are specially tailored menus in the restaurants, guided wine tastings in the cellars and wineries by professional sommeliers, street music and theatre, grape harvesting for children and a walk to discover the archaeological treasures of the town, such as the museum, the underground lake, Porsena’s labyrinth and Etruscan tombs and catacombs.

04 Capoliveri 01

Over in Scansano, the Grape Festival, Festa dell’Uva, held on September 26th and 27th, is a tribute to its Morellino wine. This Sangiovese based red wine is made on the hills surrounding the village in this coastal area of Maremma. The festival offers local dishes such as wild boar and pecorino cheese paired to the Morellino wine, as well as non traditional dishes such as cacciucco, the fish stew, and linguine pasta with rock-fish. Wine lovers may want to catch a ferry for the island of Elba and pop over to lovely Capoliveri. Between the end of September and the beginning of October, in fact, the town habitually holds its Festa dell’Uva. Not only are the location and surroundings breathtaking but also visitors will have the possibility of seeing the four quarters of town compete in various games and competitions bound to folk traditions. Here wine and traditions repeat themselves in one of the most beautiful and traditional of Elba’s festivities.

05

Certainly worth a trip to Tuscany during Autumn.

Capalbio, picturesque nooks, wine and wild boar

01 Capalbio
The perfectly preserved medieval village of Capalbio lies in the extreme south of Tuscany on a hilltop dominating the wild Maremma coast. Its picturesque streets and flowered squares, together with the magnificent surroundings and long sandy beaches attract visitors all year round.

02 Hills surrounding Capalbio

Capalbio is also known as the “Little Athens” for the environmental context in which it is set and for the historical and artistic importance assumed during the Renaissance. It has received various recognitions and prizes for its shrewd safeguard and management of its beaches, landscapes and surrounding environment.

The rooftops of the old town centre of Capalbio from the tower

The name Capalbio probably derives from the Latin Caput Album or Campus Albus, white cape or field, due to the white alabaster stone dug up in the area. The first mention of the village goes back to 805 AD, when Capalbio was donated by Charlemagne to the Abbey of the Tre Fontane near Rome. Later it fell under the rule of the Aldobrandeschi family, then Orvieto, followed by the Republic of Siena and the Orsini family. These were years of great wealth, leading to the accomplishment of many public works such as the fortress and the walls. Unfortunately after being conquered by the Spaniards and assigned to Cosimo I de’ Medici, Capalbio decayed and malaria depopulated the area.

04 View from the walls

Today the hills produce excellent red, white and rosé wines, the Capalbio DOC, and the charming medieval town is a popular tourist attraction. From the ancient crenellated walls visitors can admire a breathtaking view of the Maremma countryside while the tower of the Aldobrandeschi Fortress watches over everyone. A stroll around the village offers many picturesque nooks and sights such as the renowned square Piazza Magenta.

05 Piazza Magenta

Amongst the many events the town organizes, coming up soon is its celebrated Wild Boar Festival. This year at its 50th edition, the festival will be held from September 9th to 13th. This milestone will be celebrated with its traditional scrumptious dishes such as polenta with wild boar sauce, acquacotta soup, wild boar stew and steaks and many more. Also on programme a series of events such as a photographic exhibition, a painting competition, a vintage car and motorbike meeting, an archery competition, a flag waving show, a demonstration by the Maremma Butteri cowboys and to end a firework show. You name it, they’ve got it! Certainly worth a visit.

Boccaccesca 2015

01 Certaldo

Food festivals aren’t simply a Summer thing here in Tuscany. Autumn offers a large variety of food and wine events especially with the grape harvesting, olive picking and truffle hunting period coming up. Among these one of the most popular events is Boccaccesca in Certaldo (Florence).

02 Boccaccesca

Certainly held in honour of its renowned townsman, Renaissance poet Giovanni Boccaccio, the heading also refers to the other meaning of the adjective boccaccesco, meaningly ‘licentious’. And honestly with all the different food and wine the stalls lined up along Certaldo’s main streets have to offer, a bit of licentiousness is the minimum!

03 Boccaccesca chefs

This lovely medieval town will host handicraft stalls, a market with typical Tuscan food produce, both Tuscan and Italian street food, home brewed beer, cooking shows, adult and children cooking workshops. Wine tastings will be in the Boccaccesca wine shop inside the Church of S.S. Tommaso e Prospero, while roasted chestnuts can be found in front of Palazzo Pretorio. A square will host the typical dishes and products of the towns twinned to Certaldo: Neuruppin in Germany, Kanramachi in Japan, Chinon in France and the Italian towns of Ripatransone and Cossignano in the Marche region.

04 Handicraft stalls

As always there will be the Chichibio prize-giving for the competition amongst Italian upper secondary cooking schools as well as the Premio Speciale Boccaccesca for the youngest most unconventional food and wine journalist of the year. This year the event is being held from October 2nd to 4th. Novelties of this edition will be the absence of an admission ticket and the inclusion of the lower part of town in the events.

05 beer

What certainly makes the event special, however, are the multitude of food stalls all around this beautiful town which offer also a taste of tradition and culture. As the Artistic Director of the event Claudia Palmieri so well says, “Be curious of everything around you. Don’t stop in front of the unknown: try it, taste it. The great chefs will guide you! Only in this way you’ll be able to say: I was at Boccaccesca!”
