Per le vie di Bagnone – Walking around Bagnone

 01 Bagnone MS

Perched on a hill in Lunigiana, inside the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park, is the medieval village of Bagnone. The hamlet overlooks the waterfalls of the Bagnone stream, an affluent of the Magra River, while is itself dominated by the impressively high peak of Monte Sillara (1,861 m – 6,106 ft).

 02 Bagnone MS

On the summit of the village is the old Medici castle, with the medieval church of San Niccolò on one side and a maze of narrow cobbled streets and stone bridges descending from all sides.  Bagnone is a hamlet full of legends, typical of the Lunigiana region. One legend has it that on a Friday evening witches would gather under a large oak tree, while another says that one of the old bridges is guarded by a ghost armed with scythe preventing people to cross it. Some locals say that they can still hear the cries of those imprisoned many centuries ago within the Castle’s dungeons.

 03 Bagnone MS

The magical atmosphere that surrounds Bagnone is something that visitors can experiment all year round, but especially in these days in which the village has organized the event Per le vie di Bagnone, “Walking around Bagnone”. From August 13th to 16th the streets and squares of this medieval hamlet will be full of live music and dancing, food and wine stalls with local dishes (such as the panigacci savoury pancakes), handicrafts of all sorts, cultural events and much more. Certainly an opportunity not to miss if you travelling in this part of Tuscany.

Lizzatura, bringing the white marble down the hard way

 01

Lizzatura is an Italian word to describe the millenary way of moving blocks of Carrara marble weighing tons down from the Apuan Alps into the valley. The 650 quarry sites  on the Apuan Alps above Carrara (today half of which are abandoned), used this technique until the middle of the 20th century. The method allowed the blocks of marble to descend very steep slopes covered in loose rubble by means of long wooden poles used as rollers and rope.

 02

In use since the Egyptian Era, it is useless to say that this system was very dangerous and many lives were lost in the attempt to move these gigantic blocks of marbles on wooden sleds over rollers, with only manpower to hold it back with ropes. There are even notes on the lizzatura handwritten by Michelangelo and Leonardo who both witnessed the hardship of this transportation  during the 16th-century when searching for marble for their masterpieces.

 03

Since 1998, on every first Sunday of August, a historical re-enactment of this marble moving technique is held as a tribute to those generations of quarry workers who during the centuries have dedicated their lives to the extraction of one of the most famous metamorphic rocks in the world. This year the appointment is on August 9th when at 9.15 am at the Ponti di Vara a team of lizzatori will descend with a block of marble of over 20 tons down a 50% slope. It will be possible to study how the men prepare the block and fasten it to the sled and then follow the descent down the mountain until the tip. During this stage onlookers will witness the quarry workers’ high skills and the way they signal among themselves possible dangers due to the loose rubble. Certainly an event unique in its own kind which mustn’t be missed.

The Tuscan Montecarlo, between vineyards and olive groves

 01 Montecarlo

Located close to Lucca and Pisa is the small town of Montecarlo. Unlike its Monégasque namesake which lazes between sea and escarpment, the Tuscan version is set between a sea of fields and lush green hills. This town lies on the Wine and Olive Oil Trail of Lucca, Montecarlo and Versilia. It is, in fact, the land of the Montecarlo DOC wines, commonly made from the Sémillon, Sauvignon blanc and Pinot bianco grape varietals. An original choice considering that most Tuscan white wines are made from Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes. Wines from this region are often called the best Tuscan whites.

 02 Montecarlo

For this reason during the summer Montecarlo rightly organizes various wine and food events starting in May with ViaVinaria during which wineries and farmhouses open their doors to visitors. In July the town hosts “Montecarlo Jazz & Wine”, and the “Historical, Artistic Wine Tour of Montecarlo” (Tour Storico Artistico Enologico di Montecarlo), and again “Montecarlo is On the Way” (Montecarlo è di Strada). Coming soon is its famous Wine Festival, Festa del Vino. This year it starts on August 27th and finishes on September 8th. For over 45 years this event has represented the traditional appointment of Montecarlo with the month of  September, marking the climax of its touristic-cultural season. Those visiting Montecarlo during this period will be able to attend musical and folk shows, stop at the food and wine stalls and taste some local excellencies and enjoy exhibitions of all sorts. The event will also include the Wine and Green Salon, a happening inside Montecarlo’s gardens with the presence of the wineries of the territory.

Peccioli, one of the Queens of the Valdera

 01

On the top of a hill dominating the Valdera, in the area commonly known as the Colline Pisane, the Pisan hills, sits the medieval village of Peccioli. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and green gently rolling hills, the town boasts the Orange Flag trademark, the award bestowed by the Italian Touring Club (TCI) association to those villages with outstanding hospitality and touristic services. Built around the ruins of a medieval castle, today the heart of Peccioli throbs around the 11th-century church of the Pieve di San Varano. The façade of the Church has five blind arcades and Lombard bands and a bell tower built in 1885 which, from afar, is the distinguishing feature of Peccioli.

 02

The church overlooks the main square, Piazza del Popolo, which also comprises a lovely open gallery, the town hall and the Palazzo Pretorio. This medieval palace was renovated between the 18th and 19th century and bears on its façade the 19 coat of arms of the families of notables and podestà who during the centuries here held the reins of power. Today the palace is the seat of the Museum of Russian Ikons. The museum opened in the year 2000 thanks to the donation of 60 Russians icons by journalist Francesco Bigazzi, for many years correspondent from Moscow, and is entitled to him. In another square, Piazza del Carmine, is the Archaeological Museum of Peccioli which preserves the Etruscan findings that were found in the surroundings. The most precious piece of the collection is an Attic red-figure kylix made by the famous Greek vase painter Makron, who was active in Athens ca. 490-480 BC.

 03 Parco Preistorico

Outside Peccioli a huge tourist attraction is the Prehistoric Park. Here families will find an incredible playing area for their children with life-size models of dinosaurs and also learn something from the many fossils found on site. Nearby is also the Teatro del Silenzio of Lajatico, the open air amphitheatre where Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, born here, holds a concert every year.

 04

Very near Pisa and Volterra, Peccioli is also in an excellent position for daily trips to Florence and Siena. Among the many holiday accommodations in the area, this time we would like to draw your attention to this magnificent luxury villa for eleven people with swimming pool just outside Peccioli. Certainly a place where to spend your dream holiday.

August in Montepulciano

 Bravio delle Botti la marchiatura

While June is certainly Pisa’s most action-packed month, August definitely has in store many events for Montepulciano. Kicking off on  August 10th with Calici di Stelle (our previous blog) which unites stargazing with the excellent wines of the Vino Nobile Wine Trail, another wine tasting event pops up on the 21st: Cantine in Piazza.

 Cantine in Piazza

Cantine in Piazza, aka Wine Cellars in the Square, is actually the traditional prelude to the annual cooking competition A Tavola con il Nobile, Dinner is Served with Vino Nobile. Underway since 2003, A Tavola con il Nobile is traditionally held on the second last weekend of the month with the intention to celebrate the quality of the typical local dishes exploiting the characteristics of the prestigious Montepulciano wines. The competition is amongst the eight quarters of town, who even reach the point of reinterpreting the recipes.

 A Tavola con il Nobile

The backdrop of both events is the magnificent Piazza Grande which will host the stalls of the wineries belonging to the Consorzio del Vino Nobile. Visitors and wine lovers from all over the world will have the opportunity to taste Vino Nobile DOCG, Rosso di Montepulciano DOC and other excellent wines of the territory.

Bravio delle Botti Proclama del Gonfanoliere

This evening is just the first of a week packed with food and wine, as well as cultural, activities leading to the climax of the month: the Bravìo delle Botti, the barrel race which this year takes place on August 30th. The whole show kicks off on August 22nd with a pageant  held by the eight town quarters through the town centre reaching Piazza Grande where this year’s Gonfalonier will be nominated. Following is a huge party with the flag wavers and drummers of Montepulciano entertaining everyone.

 Bravio delle Botti flagwaving

The next day, the 23rd, the flag wavers and drummers will again be protagonists leading another pageant to the Poliziano Theatre where the Bravìo, a painted banner for which the quarters will compete, will be presented. The banner is then exposed and the flag wavers and drummers continue their merrymaking.

Bravio delle Botti Prova degli spingitore

From that evening until the 28th the quarters will have the opportunity to nightly  ‘exercise’ their barrel pushing up the steep central  streets of Montepulciano. It might be useful to mention that these casks weigh 80 kilos! The teams are two-manned and the players are known as spingitori. On the evening of the 27th the pageant of the Candle Procession ambles through the historic centre ending in fireworks show and much flag waving and drumming.

Bravio delle Botti Corteo dei Ceri

On the morning of the 30th the standard bearers and participants of each quarter exit Palazzo Comunale. Then the heavy barrels are marked by fire and the flag wavers entertain in front of Montepulciano’s Cathedral.  A series of other events amongst which the offer of the candles fill the rest of the day until the race itself starts at 7 pm. One has to admire the strength of the spingitori as they roll these heavy casks up a steep route that is nearly two kilometres long (little more than a mile) until the Cathedral’s parvis. The winning quarter takes the painted banner and the whole town celebrates the victors all night long.

 Bravio delle Botti spingitori

An exceptional  way to make August and the holiday’s roll on, perhaps in one of our holiday accommodations around Montepulciano such as this lovely farmhouse with self catering holiday flats and swimming pool. The perfect place to relax and savour excellent wines while surrounded by the vineyard covered hills of Montepulciano.
