Blue Magic at the Silver Museum, Palazzo Pitti

 01 16th-century flask

On show at the Museo degli Argenti, the Silver Museum of Palazzo Pitti in Florence, is the exhibition “Lapis lazuli. Blue Magic”. The aim of the show, the first to ever be dedicated to this specific topic, is to document the passion for this semi-precious stone and its use in science and art from its origins to the present day.

02 A sample from the Sar-i Sang mine in Afghanistan

Contrary to popular belief, lapis lazuli is not a mineral but a rock composed of several minerals. Its blue colour is due to the mineral that is dominant, the lazurite. Lapis lazuli is found in limestone in the Kokcha River valley of Badakhshan province in north-eastern Afghanistan, where the Sar-e-Sang mine deposits have been worked for more than 6,000 years. Afghanistan was the source of lapis for the ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations, as well as the later Greeks and Romans. Ancient Egyptians obtained this material through trade from Afghanistan. During the height of the Indus valley civilization, about 2000 BC, the Harappan colony now known as Shortugai was established near the lapis mines.

For centuries lapis lazuli has been used for creating ornamental articles or objects of worship. The exhibition begins with the archaeological finds from the excavations in the Indus Valley (Mehrgarth, 7000 BC), in Mesopotamia (Sumer, 6000 BC, Ur, 2500 BC) and Egypt (during the XVIII dynasty, about 1500 BC). During the Renaissance, the preciousness of the material was particularly popular in Florence. Yet one of the most spectacular European collections of objects in lapis lazuli  began at the Medici court : not only goblets, vases and amphorae, but also inlaid furniture, table tops and products made in the workshops founded by Francis I in the Casino di San Marco and in the laboratories established by Ferdinand I in the Vasari Uffizi complex, until the decline of the dynasty.

Powdered lapis lazuli was used as pigment from ancient times until the nineteenth century. As iconographical colour of the Holy Virgin, as symbolic colour of royal ranks, as emblematic colour of the kings of France, as fashion colour, blue becomes, in the late Middle Ages, the most beautiful and noble of colours. Working its way through centuries of masterpieces, the exhibition ends with the works of 20th-century artists who used  the new deep blue pigment, a synthetic industrial resin, created by French artist Yves Klein.

On until October 11th at the Museo degli Argenti, Palazzo Pitti, Florence. Opening hours during June, July and August from 8.15 am to 6.50 pm and during September and October from 8.15 am to 6.30 pm. Full price ticket costs 10 Euros and also allows admission to the Porcelain Museum, the Boboli Gardens, the Costume Gallery and the Barbini Garden.

The Salvatore Ferragamo Museum presents A Palace and the City

01 Palazzo Spini Feroni, Piazza Santa Trinita

This year, 2015, Florence is celebrating the 150th anniversary of when the town was declared capital of the recently established Kingdom of Italy. During the years as capital, 1865-1871, the town hall was moved from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Spini Feroni, today seat of the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum. Here important decisions were made, including Florence’s current town planning.

For this reason the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum has decided to commemorate the occasion with an exhibition and a catalogue, Un Palazzo e la Città, A Palace and the City. The show wishes to represent the complex history of this building (private residence for noble families, government headquarters, luxury hotel for guests such as Chancellor von Metternich and composer Franz Liszt, second seat of the Gabinetto Scientifico Letterario Vieusseux, artistic workshop and fashion atelier) against the backdrop of Florence.

03 Florence diorama by Ramsay Richard Reinagle, 1806

The symbol of the exhibition is inspired by a 360 degree panorama engraving of Florence by Richard Ramsay Reinagle, taken in 1806 from the crenellated roof of Palazzo Spini Feroni and published for promotional purposes in the “Journal des Luxus und der Moden” as a kind of diorama of the city.

The Palace represents a slice of Italian culture and is today the world symbol of the Ferragamo fashion house: a clear demonstration of the fact that the talent of Italians also thrives from the places it works in and from which it takes nutriment and that beauty effectively does create beauty.

The exhibition is on show until April 3rd 2016 and is curated by Stefania Ricci and Riccardo Spinelli. Opening hours, every day from 10 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on August 15th, December 25th, January 1st. Full price ticket costs 6 Euros.

Pistoia, face to face with Della Robbia

 01 Pistoia, Ospedale Del Ceppo

30 kilometres (19 miles) northwest of Florence is the medieval town of Pistoia. It is capital of the same name province, the second smallest in Tuscany after Prato.  Every year Pistoia’s well-preserved and charming town centre attracts many tourists inside its old walls.

02 Pistoia, Piazza Duomo and bell tower

After the extraordinary Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the 12th-century Cathedral and lined with medieval buildings, another important sight in Pistoia is the incredibly beautiful medieval hospital, Ospedale del Ceppo.

 03 Pistoia, Ospedale Del Ceppo

The beauty of this building, the result of a series of additions and restorations on the original 13th-century edifice, is particularly the current façade. The Renaissance arcaded loggia was built in 1502, inspired by the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence, while the magnificent ceramic glaze frieze by Santi Buglioni and the tondoes by Giovanni della Robbia were made in 1525.

04 Restoration of the ceramic glaze freize

Recently these remarkable ceramic glaze masterpieces have been restored and Pistoia has decided on a unique experience to admire them: a guided tour on a special scaffold. This way these incredible works of arts will be within touching distance.

 05 Pistoia, Ospedale del Ceppo

The guided tours are available every day from 10.30 am to 11.20 am and from 3.30 pm to 4.20 pm and in various languages. Reservations are recommended.
