Lynn Chadwick: One Retrospective for Two Gardens

01 Chadwick, a retrospective

On at the Boboli Gardens and at the Giardino Bardini in Florence a retrospective of English sculptor and artist Lynn Russell Chadwick.

 02 Chadwick, a retrospective

Best known for his semi-abstract bronze and steel sculptures, Chadwick was one of the most important masters of British sculpture of the last century. Born in Barnes, London in 1914, he received the first acknowledgements in 1952 when he participated in the new generation of British sculptors group exhibition at the Venice Biennale, where two years later he was awarded the International Sculpture Prize. From that moment he became the protagonist of other international scenes such as the São Paulo Art Biennial, with exhibitions in the most important institutions in New York, London, Paris and Brussels which today preserve his collections.

 03 Chadwick, a retrospective

The exhibition designed for the Boboli Gardens and Giardino Bardini sees 23 sculptures on show with the aim to invite visitors to discover the topographic characteristics of the two parks, as well as the monumental and scenic ones. Almost all the works selected for the Florentine project are usually housed on the grounds of Lypiatt Park, Gloucestershire, where Chadwick died in 2003.

 04 Chadwick, a retrospective

Chadwick’s work associates a strong, architectural design element to the recognition of the artist’s manual work, which is especially evident in his older works, characterized by a particularly wrought and engraved bronze surface. Over the years he achieves mainly geometrical representations both in the definition of animal and human anatomy, as in the realization of conflicting structures that refer to the order / disorder of the man-machine-nature relationship.

 05 Chadwick, a retrospective

On until August 30th, the exhibition is curated by Alberto Salvadori. Open in May from 8.15 am to 6.30 pm, in June, July and August from 8.15 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on the first and last Monday of the month.

Festa Medievale BiancoAzzurra in Castiglion Fiorentino

 01 The Cassero Tower

One of the main sights of the beautiful small, walled city of Castiglion Fiorentino, between Arezzo and Cortona in Valdichiana, is its fortress, the Cassero, completed in 1367. In the 15th century, the nuns of San Girolamo used the fortress as a convent, and by the 19th century much of the fortress had been destroyed, with the remaining structure used as a prison.

 02

Today the district surrounding the remaining tower, Rione Cassero, is renowned for organizing an impressive medieval festival called the Festa Medievale BiancaAzzurra, white and blue like the colours of its coat of arms. The event is an re-enactment of the medieval history of Castiglion Fiorentino and is held in the large square in front of the Cassero tower during the last weekend of May and the first of June.

 03

Originally conceived to celebrate the first twenty years of activity of Rione Cassero’s Historical Musician Group, the first festival was so successful that this year it reaches its 14th edition. Visitors have free admission to Piazzale del Cassero where they can attend performances of various artists: falconers, jugglers, musicians, swordsmen, flag wavers, sword eaters and jesters.

 04

Other extra features are the medieval inns skirting the Piazzale offering local wine and a vast array of traditional Val di Chiana dishes which can be enjoyed at the long tables with benches scattered around. Everywhere the locals intermingle dressed up in their medieval costumes. Some run the market stalls where it is possible to find interesting local handicrafts. Others are busy cooking and serving dishes. They are all there to have as much fun as their guests and they do an excellent job of it.

 05

This year the event will be held from May 29th to June 2nd and again from June 5th to 7th.  The town is beautiful to visit also in other periods of the year and its surroundings are gorgeous. Nearby on a hill is a stunning stone villa for rent with swimming pool. It can comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests and enjoys a breathtaking view over the valleys of Val di Chio and Val di Chiana. Certainly worth a visit.

Massa Marittima and its Balestro del Girifalco

 01 Girifalco

The Gyrfalcon Crossbow competition is one of the greatest medieval historical re-enactments in Tuscany. It takes places in the main square of Massa Marittima, in front of its magnificent Cathedral, and is held twice a year: on the fourth Sunday in May and on the 14th of August.

 02 Cattedrale di San Cerbone

The contest sees the town’s crossbowmen compete in quarter groups. Massa Marittima has three districts: Cittanuova (wearing white, red and green colours), Cittavecchia (white, black and yellow) and Borgo (golden yellow, blue and red). Each quarter has 8 crossbowmen in their team for a total of 24 competitors. The medieval pageant consists of 150 performers dressed in precious velvet costumes representing all the typical period characters, who together with the renowned Company of Flag wavers and Musicians, Compagnia Sbandieratori e Musici Massetani, perform before the event.

 Balestro del Girifalco 2008

The Balestro del Girifalco is held on two days. Day one is considered the day of the challenge, when authorities draw in which order the quarters compete. The colours drawn are then displayed on the town hall’s façade. The first to shoot are the luckiest, having a completely free surface. On the second day, the pageant winds its way along the medieval streets of Massa Marittima, through the various districts, collecting the various participants. Once they reach the square in front of the Cathedral flag wavers and drummers entertain onlookers until the herald announces the contest is open.

 Balestro del Girifalco 2008

Each crossbowman has his own crossbow and one by one takes a shot at the target which is at a distance of 36 metres. The target is a 13 cm wooden frustum of cone protruding 42 cm from its base, a 50 cm circle. Not an easy aim. The winning quarter receives the Palio, a hand-painted silk drape, made each year by a different artist. The best crossbowman wins a symbolic golden arrow. Whoever wins, the celebrations following are worth the visit to this breathtaking part of Maremma.

The medieval town of Certaldo in the middle of the Valdelsa is renowned as hometown of the Decameron author, Giovanni Boccaccio. The magnificent red brick buildings and tiny streets attract many visitors every year, especially during its several festivals. Florence Cathedral and its Summer Solstice’s spectacular show

 01

For over 5 centuries, during the month of June, astronomy and architecture have fused together in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.  It is, in fact, during this period that visitors can witness one of the most unusual and  striking shows the Summer solstice has to offer.

 02

Thanks to the gnomon Paolo Toscanelli had built in Brunelleschi’s magnificent dome, it is possible to observe the passage of the sun’s rays in the Cathedral since 1475. Not the traditional gnomon with a blade that casts a shadow, Toscanelli’s is a gnomonic hole situated on the lantern at a height of 90 metres which projects the sun on a shaded surface, in this case the Cathedral’s marble pavement. The round spot can, in fact, be observed crawling over the floor to a specific white marble spot just on the left of the high altar.

 03

This event occurs 4 times during the month of June, every year on a different date. This year it will be possible to admire the phenomenon on Monday 8th June, Friday 12th, Saturday 20th and Thursday 25th. From 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm. Free admission.
