An explosion of colours in Florence with the Color Run

01 The Color Run

The most colourful 5 km is arriving in Florence on May 23rd with the paint race known as the Color Run. This worldwide running event is touring Italy and is one of the craziest races ever and even funniest, if you don’t mind getting completely showered with paint that is.

 02 The Color Run

All runners start off with shining white T-shirts. At every kilometre they reach a colour zone and are doused by volunteers with a 100% natural colour cornmeal powder.

 03 Color Run

Apparently after the “happiest 5k” of their lives, and certainly the most colourful, the runners reach the finish line where they then dance and celebrate in front of the “finish-festival” stage.

The Color Run 2014 - Marina di Pietrasanta

So on May 23rd it’s Florence’s turn to host this event founded in March 2011 as an event to promote healthiness and happiness.  If you’re in the area don’t forget to participate in one of the most colourful and funniest event, at least as colour throwers!

Wineries with a View at the Orcia Wine Festival

01 The Val d'Orcia

The Orcia DOC Wine Trail has organized an event which traces its steps between two magnificent towns in the Valdorcia: San Quirico and Bagno Vignoni. It’s the Orcia Wine Festival and its programme will lead visitors through the magnificent landscape of the Valdorcia, across the vineyards of the Brunello di Montalcino and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, on a trail which scenically is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, and also amongst the most delicious.

02 The collegiate church of San Quirico and Santa Giulitta

Opening on Friday 24th April at Palazzo Chigi in San Quirico, the Festival kicks off with a showcase of Orcia wines and typical local food products. During the day there  will be wine classes, exhibitions, a film contest and concerts. In the spa town of Bagno Vignoni there will be ‘The Wine Walk’ through the medieval hamlet and surrounding vineyards.

 03 Bagno Vignoni

On the following two days, April 25-26, the Festival continues with the showcase at Palazzo Chigi and concerts in the evening, while in the old town centre of San Quirico there will be a vintage car gathering. At Bagno Vignoni the trekking tour continues with the addition of a Spring Market.

04 Wineries with a View, Bagno Vignoni

Possibly one of the most interesting events in programme is the Wineries with a View wine tour which accompanies visitors to some of the smaller wine estates. Here producers share the same passion and pride as the more famous Super Tuscan growers and will be happy to escort guests through the various stages of winemaking as well as offer a final wine tasting.  Furthermore, ten restaurants on the route between San Quirico d’Orcia and Bagno Vignoni are offering special samplings of the typical local dishes obviously coupled with a glass of Orcia wine.

 05 Holiday accommodations in Valdorcia

The package tours to choose from for this festival are many and the products excellent. Three days are sincerely not enough to visit this wonderful region of Tuscany and we highly recommend a longer vacation, maybe in one of our holiday accommodations in the Valdorcia.

The Dream and the Glory, Tribute to Frederick Stibbert

 01 French headpiece

Until September 6th the Stibbert Museum in Florence is hosting an exhibition in honour of its founder, Frederick Stibbert. “The Dream and the Glory”, in fact, represents the extraordinary feat of this man who succeeded in collecting over 36,000 artefacts, including a vast collection of armours belonging to Eastern and Western civilizations.

 02 The Stibbert Museum

Son of an English man and a Tuscan woman, Frederick Stibbert received his education in England and an extreme wealth at the death of his grandfather, Giles Stibbert. Thanks to this he dedicated his life to collecting objects, antiques and artefacts and turned his Florentine villa into a museum. When the collection outsized the villa he hired an architect to add on rooms.  Today 57 crowded rooms exhibit his collections from all around the world, with most of the walls covered in tapestries and paintings. Each room intentionally recalls a specific historical period and cultural ambience.

 03 The Cavalcade Room

Over 16,000 pieces of arms and armours from the 15th century to the 19th century make up the most extensive collection of the museum. Coming from all over the world this collection counts over 80 Samurai armours and hundreds of swords while the Cavalcade Room boasts fourteen 16th-century knights on horseback and fourteen foot soldiers. Among its illustrious visitors are Queen Victoria, who visited the villa in 1890, as well as Oscar Wilde and Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio. At Frederick Stibbert’s death in 1906 the villa and its collection was given to the city of Florence.

04 Frederick Stibbert

Opened on March 27th, the exhibit “The Dream and the Glory” is a showcase of some of the masterpieces collected by Stibbert with the intention of not only highlighting their beauty and peculiarity but also introduce the visitor to the 19th-century cultural atmosphere during which this eclectic collector’s vision was formed. So not only arms and armours on show but also objects, paintings, sketches and photographs that testify to the taste of the romantic revival of medieval life and document Stibbert’s deep interest in the history of civil and military costume.

05 The Dream and the Glory

Open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 pm, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm. Full price ticket costs 8 Euros.

Lucignano, a question of charm and golden trees

 01 Lucignano

Strategically located between Arezzo and Siena in the heart of the beautiful Valdichiana, is the ancient medieval village of Lucignano. For over 4 centuries it was disputed by the two cities, as well as Florence and Perugia, making it undeniably a very hard-fought location.

02 St Francis church next to Palazzo Pretorio

Today it remarkably preserves its 12th-century buildings, such as the Palazzo Pretorio, and the renowned elliptical walls. The Gothic church of St. Francis was built during the 13th century while the Sienese fortress was erected during the following century and is ascribed to Bernardo Puccini, whereas, outside the walls, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Querce (1568) is attributed to Giorgio Vasari.

 03 L'albero della vita

Inside the town’s Museum are conserved works of art from the 13th to the 18th century. Among these, the well-known “Tree of Life”, L’albero della vita, an elaborate reliquary made for the Franciscan church. The masterpiece is a gilded and bejewelled tree surmounted by a crucified figure, 2,60 m tall, created by jewellers Ugolino da Vieri in 1350 and by Gabriello  d’Antonio who signed it in 1471.

From the main trunk, resting on a Gothic temple-like shrine on three levels, twelve branches spread out. The branches are covered with decorative leaves and tiny shrines which once gave shelter to miniatures and rock crystals, while coral twigs encircle them in representation of Christ’s blood.

05 La Maggiolata

In addition to historic buildings and magnificent masterpieces, Lucignano also boasts a rich programme of events during the year. Starting in April and continuing until Christmas Eve, the town organizes various food and wine events, many flower shows, as well as a May song festival in which floats covered in flowers parade through town, and also a Music Band Gathering which reunites bands from all over Valdichiana and even farther.
