Easter Sunday is a Free Admission Sunday

Since last July, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities has introduced free admissions on the first Sunday of every month to all State sites and museums.

This means that this month the first Sunday is also Easter Sunday. So what better way to walk off your Tuscan Easter lunch than go visit a couple of museums or sites?

If you’ve planned to spend your Easter holidays in Florence you’ll be able to visit for free the Uffizi Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Boboli Gardens, as well as the Medici Chapels, the Vasari Corridor, the Bargello Museum, and many more.

 04 The Charterhouse of Calci outside Pisa

Around Florence the Medicean Villas will be on the list, while in Pisa there’s the National Museum of San Matteo and just outside the monumental charterhouse of Calci.

 05 Vasari’s house and garden in Arezzo

Down in Arezzo the Vasari House and the Basilica Inferiore of the San Francesco Cathedral will be free of charge, while at Cortona it will be possible to visit the various  Etruscan chamber-tombs.

 06 Roselle Archaeological Park

At Siena both the National Archaeological Museum and the Pinacoteca Nazionale are open, while down in Maremma it will be possible to visit the archaeological sites.

Greek, Roman and Etruscan Masterpieces on show at the National Archaeological Museum of Florence

The National Archaeological Museum of Florence is hosting until June 21st the exhibition “Great small bronzes, Greek, Roman and Etruscan Masterpieces”. In association with Palazzo Strozzi’s  exhibition of bronze sculptures of the Hellenistic world, “Power and Pathos”, this display offers visitors an overview of the outstanding collection of bronze statuettes the Houses of Medici and Lorraine put together during three centuries.

Over 170 fascinating works belonging to the world of art, mythology and iconography. Open on Mondays from 8.30 am to 2 pm, Tuesday-Friday 8.30 am to 7 pm, Saturday-Sunday 8.30 am to 2 pm.

From Patches to Decadentism in Montepulciano

 01 Adolfo Tommasi, Il fischio del vapore

From April 4th to November 1st Montepulciano, the town of the Vino Nobile, is hosting the exhibition “From Patches to the Decadentism – Private Paintings in the Lands of Poliziano”.

Over 100 paintings and drawings for a journey starting with some of the most famous Macchiaioli artists, such as Giuseppe Abbati, Odardo Borrani, Giovanni Fattori and Telemaco Signorini, and ending with 20th-century painters.

The exhibit is also a voyage through various genres of painting: landscape, portrayal, rural, urban and contemporary.

The works of arts will be hosted in the town’s museum Pinacoteca Crociani and in the Fortress. Amongst these oil paintings, drawings and watercolours there will also be some masterpieces that have never been exhibited before.

Open on Mondays from 3 pm to 8 pm, from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm. Last admission at 7.15 pm. Full price ticket costs 8 Euros.

Expo 2015 and the Cathedral of Siena

 01 The Cathedral of Siena

The magnificent marble mosaic floor of Siena’s Cathedral will be exceptionally uncovered the whole month of July in honour of the 2015 Expo edition.

The main attraction will be the Moses and the water from the rock of Horeb mosaic by Domenico Beccafumi, right in front of the main altar. The theme of water as a life source reconnects with the slogan of this Expo’s edition: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.

Another event organized by the Cathedral for the Expo was opened on March 1st in the Cathedral’s Crypt. Here on display until October 31st is Mannerist’s painter Francesco Vanni’s painting “Saint Catherine Drinks the Blood of Christ” (c. 1594).

Power and Pathos: Hellenistic Works of Art at Palazzo Strozzi

01 Power and Pathos

Still on display until June 21st at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the major exhibition “Power and Pathos. Bronze Sculptures of the Hellenistic World”. Opened on March 14th, this showcase houses some of the ancient world’s most important masterpieces of sculpture.

Arriving from some of the most important Archaeological Museums in the world, these bronze sculptures are witnesses of the spectacular artistic developments of the Hellenistic era, the production and casting processes and the finishing techniques adopted as well as the fascinating stories of their discovery.
