Eroica Montalcino 2018

The Eroica Montalcino is a vintage bike ride along a stretch of the renowned white roads of the breathtaking 209 km L’Eroica route. South of Siena, this itinerary will take participants on May 27th through Val d’Arbia, Val d’Orcia and the Crete Senesi.

Five routes depart from Montalcino and stretch out into the Val d’Orcia, through Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d’Orcia, Pienza and the heart of the Crete Senesi, particularly Montisi and Trequanda. The Long Route is 171 km long and will lead cyclists through the Unesco treasures of the Val d’Orcia. The Medium Route is 96 km and shouldn’t be underestimated because fit legs are needed here for those steep slopes.

The 70 km Short Route is just perfect for those wishing to discover the Eroica itinerary for the first time, while the Brunello Route, 46 km long, is for those wishing to know what the Long Route is but without going too far. Finally, the 27 km Eroica Stroll has been thought for families with children who want to discover this magnificent territory and the marvels of Montalcino.

Montalcino will also be hosting a festival where visitors can breathe in the magical vintage atmosphere of old bikes, large beards and moustaches, old (and new) jerseys and also get the chance to try tasty local dishes and excellent wine.  Other events will be on programme for this cycling experience which combines traditionalism with breathtaking sceneries.

Palazzo Strozzi presents “Dawn of a Nation”

On at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence the exhibition “Dawn of a Nation. From Guttuso to Fontana and Schifano”. On until July 22nd, the show represents an exploration of art, politics and society in Italy from the 1950s to the years of protest in the late 1960s. On display 80 works of art by artists such as Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Emilio Vedova, Piero Manzoni, Mario Schifano, Mario Merz and Michelangelo Pistoletto.

The works on display are intended to illustrate Italian culture after World War II, in the years of the so-called “economic miracle” that profoundly marked Italian society. In this period the world also witnessed a development in art with a new vision which was stoked by an extraordinarily vibrant and inventive burst of creativity, that spared neither style, form or material.

Visitors will, thus, be lead through the dispute between Realism and Abstraction, onwards to the triumph of Informal Art and up to Pop Art until the Arte Povera and the Conceptual Art. Twenty years of creative growth.

The exhibition is open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, on Thursdays closing at 11 pm. Full tickets cost 13 Euros.

Terre di Siena Treno Natura – Spring 2018

The Nature Train is back to take its passengers around the breathtaking Sienese territory. The first steam locomotive to leave the station of Siena this year will be the March Truffle Train on March 25th. Final destination San Giovanni D’Asso and its 16th March Truffle of the Crete Senesi Fair. Here visitors will find stalls full of truffles and other local produce as well as be able to visit the castle and the Truffle Museum.

On April 2nd it will be the turn of the Regional Antiques Fair  at Buonconvento, “Things of the Past”, and on April 22nd the Orcia Wine Festival for San Quirico d’Orcia. The “Spring in Val d’Orcia” train will leave Siena’s station on the 25th, instead, for a visit to the picturesque Castiglione d’Orcia and its castles.

On the first of May the steam engine will direct itself for Labour Day to Sant’Angelo Scalo, near Montalcino, for the May songs. Here there will also be market stalls to peruse while the folk bands perform around you. On the 13th it will be the turn of Asciano and its food market “Ancient Flavours in Ancient Lands”, while on the 20th it’s time to celebrate trains and their story with a visit to Torrenieri and then to a Brunello of Montalcino winery. The May trips end on the 27th with the “Etruscans Train” which will take passengers to Chiusi on the tracks of the great king Lars Porsena.

The last date before the summer break is on June 2nd. For the Italian National and Republic Day the Nature Train will be going for a trip through the history and landscapes of the Crete Senesi. However, there will be vintage motor coaches taking over. The first one leaves Siena on the 10th June for the Terracotta Fair in Petroio where passengers can stroll the streets looking at the terracotta products, watch the Farmers Bullfight and try some local food and wine.

Another motor coach leaves Siena on June 17th for the “Festa del Barbarossa” in San Quirico d’Orcia. Here the town celebrates an historical event with an archery feat. On July 8th the motor coach is again on its way, this time for Abbadia San Salvatore on Mount Amiata. Here visitors will be swept into the past, more precisely to the Middle Ages with the historical re-enactment the “Offerta dei Censi”, the ‘wealth offerings’, where the town quarters challenge each other in various games.

Other events and games on the Sienese territory will be visited by our Nature Train after the summer in September.

Leonardo da Vinci: a life in drawing – on tour in the UK

To mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Royal Collection Trust has selected 12 drawings for 12 simultaneous exhibitions to be held in the UK from February 1st to May 6th 2019.

The 144 drawings, chosen from among the 550 da Vinci sheets bound into a single album that had been acquired by Charles II, will be on show in the Ulster Museum in Belfast, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museum Cardiff, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the Leeds Art Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Manchester Art Gallery, the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield, the Southampton City Art Gallery, the Sunderland Museums and Winter Gardens and a further location to be announced.

From May 24th to October 13th 2019 an exhibition of over 200 drawings will be held in The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace in London and from November 22nd 2019 to March 15th 2020 an exhibition of 80 drawings will be displayed in The Queen’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Also to be displayed at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, are the recently discovered studies of hands for Leonardo’s Adoration of the Magi. Initially thought to be two blank sheets of paper, examination in ultraviolet light have revealed two of Leonardo’s most beautiful drawings. The drawings had become invisible to the naked eye because of the high copper content in the stylus (pen) Leonardo used.

The drawings to be exhibited have been purposely selected by the Royal Collection Trust to reflect Leonardo’s full range of interests, including painting and sculpture, as well as his passion for architecture, engineering, anatomy, botany, geology, cartography and music.
