Gardens and Cloisters in Bloom at Pienza

 01 Pienza e i fiori

Spring is blossoming in Pienza. From May 1st to 10th the “Ideal Renaissance Town” rebuilt by Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini is hosting its 30th edition of “Pienza and Flowers”. This year cloisters and courtyards of Renaissance buildings, such as the Piccolomini Palace, the Borgia Palace and the Ammannati Palace, together with some of the town’s squares, will be decked out in Renaissance style. The most beautiful areas of Pienza will be covered in festoons with ribbons, laurel and fruit, with box plants and climbing roses as well as many other flowers.

 02 Pienza e i fiori

The traditional flower market will be held on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th in the streets of the old town centre and in the gardens of Piazza Dante Alighieri. Furthermore, it will also be possible to visit some of the historic gardens of the Val d’Orcia. A shuttle service will take visitors to discover the  magnificent green architectures of the gardens of the Piccolomini Palace, of the Horti Leonini in San Quirico d’Orcia, of the very refined garden of La Foce and the elegant Italian garden of the Massaini Palace. Here, at the end of the visit, there will be a free tasting of the food and wine products produced by the estate.

Among the side events, the museum of the Borgia Palace will be exhibiting a new, rare and precious masterpiece by painter Nicola van Houbraken (1660-1723). The painting is a monumental still life portraying Pan and his Satyrs which has never been exhibited before and belongs to an important private collection. The work will be presented on May 1st at 4.30 pm and will be on show at the Borgia Palace until June 2nd. Other events will be, under the Palazzo Comunale’s loggia, the creation and exposition of an enormous illustrated flower composition called Pugnalone di Acquapendente after the town in Lazio which traditionally make these panels with flowers and leaves, whereas the cloisters and courtyards of the surrounding 15th-century buildings will be hosting concerts, processions and Renaissance dancing.

 04 Pienza e i fiori

“Pienza e Fiori” was conceived to create a trade show which would bring out the best of the architecture of Pienza. Considering the classical floral stylistic elements of the buildings what better than flowers and the arrival of Spring as tribute?

Eroica Primavera – the Spring Eroica is back

 01

Bicycle lovers will all know what the historical Eroica is and many over the world have certainly wished to take part in it. For those who have never heard of it, it’s a historical cycling event which takes place south of Siena on the white gravel roads crossing the Val d’Arbia, Val d’Orcia and the Crete Senesi, some of the most beautiful landscapes of this magnificent region.

 02

The Eroica is run in October on a 209 km (130 miles) route and the 2014 edition saw over 5.000 people participate. Now on May 3rd is the Spring version’s turn with four routes leaving from Buonconvento and spreading out across the vineyards of Montalcino, passing by Bagno Vignoni, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza.

 03

The length of the four routes vary: the Long Route is  158 km (98 miles), the Medium Route 102 km (63 miles), the Short Route 56 km (35 miles) and the Leisure Route 27 km (17 miles).

 04

Both events are for road racing bicycles and reserved only to cyclists wearing vintage cycling or historical clothes and riding vintage-style bikes. Not a very comfortable race, then, especially considering the roads covered.

 05

However, the Eroica Primavera it’s not only for cyclists. Along the walls of Buonconvento visitors will find a vintage bike market with clothes, bikes and accessories but also a typical Tuscan market with local food products and wine as well as handicraft. Furthermore, a walk on the surrounding hills will be worthwhile, especially in this period of the year when they are covered in lush green grass and bright yellow broom.

 06

Both the Eroica races are certainly an experience which can convey the heritage that inspired the history and sport of these regions. The creator of the race, Giancarlo Bocci, not only wanted to safeguard this legacy but also preserve the last gravel roads in Tuscany, the same roads that today make this territory so precious and highly valued.

Elliott Erwitt at the Lu.C.C.A.

01 Elliott Erwitt, California, USA, 1955 - California Kiss

On show until August 30th at the Lu.C.C.A. – Lucca Center of Contemporary Art – the exhibition “Elliott Erwitt. Retrospective”, curator Maurizio Vanni. Over 136 pictures have been chosen to relate the story of this great photographer and his 60 years of career.

Elliott Erwitt, New York City, USA, 1974 - Felix, Gladys and Rover

Erwitt’s photographs are original because he has his own style which at the same time is intimist, ironic, surprising, at times impertinent and gently irreverent, but always technically flawless.

03 Elliott Erwitt, New York City, USA, 1956 - Reading book, actress Marilyn Monroe

Even the most evocative shots, however, are connected to an occasional moment, to the here and now of a place and of a time, to the spontaneous smile in front of an unconventional scene or of a visual oxymoron.

04 Elliott Erwitt, Paris, France, 1989 - Umbrella Jump, Tour Eiffel's 100th anniversary

However, as Erwitt himself says “All pictures should be, if not perfect, then at least well balanced, graphically and geographically correct. Composition is absolutely crucial and essential for any photograph”.

05 Elliott Erwitt, Paris, France, 1989 - Dog jumping

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. Full ticket costs 9 Euros.

Osteria San Guido, Bolgheri – Red Passion

01 Bolgheri Viale dei Cipressi

At the beginning of one of the most renowned roads in the world, the cypress-lined avenue leading to Bolgheri, is a cluster of farmhouses. It is the entrance to the Tenuta San Guido estate renowned throughout the world for its Sassicaia wine and thoroughbred stud farm.

02 Tenuta San Guido old vintages

Right here, in one of these buildings is the Osteria San Guido wine shop and restaurant run by Giuseppe Rossi. His passion for Bolgheri begins in the 1980s when as a youngster he would often visit the magnificent Dormello Olgiata thoroughbreds, descendants of the famous Ribot, whose racing colours are white and red crossbelts with red cap. This gave Giuseppe the opportunity to make the acquaintance of the Marchese Incisa della Rocchetta family, owners of the estate that also produced a ‘thoroughbred’ red Super Tuscan.

 03 Dormello Olgiata thoroughbreds

In 2009 Giuseppe took the decision to move definitely to Bolgheri and take up the management of the Enoteca Osteria San Guido where today one can both taste and buy some of the best wines of the area and even enjoy Mediterranean Fusion cuisine at the restaurant. Here the menu is constantly evolving with an eye on quality and seasonality. The ingredients are processed favouring rapid cooking methods and light seasoning. The fantasy in the combinations is what gives that extra touch that turns every meal into an authentic experience.

 04 Osteria San Guido

The Enoteca Osteria San Guido also organizes weddings, ceremonies and events as well as wine tastings. Open every day from mid-April to mid-October from 9 am to 11.30 pm. During winter: Monday, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9 am to 5.30 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 am to 11.30 pm. Closed on Tuesdays.
