The Iris Botanical Garden in Florence

01 Giardino dell'Iris

Certainly of the many gardens and parks in Florence, the Giardino dell’Iris, is one of the hardest to visit. In fact, it opens only for a few weeks a year, from April to May, when obviously these magnificent flowering plants, symbol of Florence since 1251, are blooming.  02 Giardino dell'Iris

The garden is owned by the National Society of Irises and is almost entirely devoted to iris plants, with over two and a half hectares of land and olive grove enjoying a breathtaking view over Florence.

 03 Giardino dell'Iris

Most noteworthy, among the 1,500 varieties (specific, sometimes reaching 2,000) of irises there are fifteen which risk extinction. Every year, during the opening season, the Garden hosts one of the most famous iris breeders’ competitions of the world.

 04 Giardino dell'Iris

Usually the garden remains open from Mondays to Fridays, from 10 am to 1 pm and from 3 pm to 7.30 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays the garden is open all day from 10 am to 7.30 pm. Free admission.

Florence goes Black Night

 01 Notte Bianca 2014 12

No rock music here, my apologies to Deep Purple. Florence has decided to celebrate its traditional White Night holding a Black Night. The poetical reason given is that to obtain light the colour white must go through all the other shades, which as we know make up the colour black. So bring out the black and light shall it be.

 02 Notte Bianca 2014 14

For this reason, the city of Florence has decided to salvage all the elements of charm and mystery that darkness conveys and organize an event on April 30th through whose magnetism light will be achieved.

 03 Notte Bianca 2014 10

First of all Black Music: from rock to jazz, from gospel to reggae, from funky to blues. All around town there will be live music and even a concert at the prison of Sollicciano (orange is the new black?). There will also be other activities involving children, handicrafts, books and the less-known areas of the city.

 04 Notte Bianca 2014 02

As Deep Purple would sing ♫ Black night is a long way from home ♫. In fact, it’s in Florence.

Gaiole in Chianti, an idyll of Tuscany

01 Chianti as seen from Brolio Castle

Located about 15 kilometres northeast of Siena, since the Middle Ages Gaiole in Chianti is in the spiritual and historical heart of the region that was so hard fought by Florence and Siena. The history of Chianti goes back centuries to when the Lega del Chianti created this area.

In 2008, Forbes’ experts named Gaiole in Chianti top choice in Europe’s most idyllic places to live. The area offers “mountains, vineyards, wineries, country inns and walking” as well as “amazing food”, while the village is “a sleepy and picturesque municipality”.

 03 Castello di Brolio

In March, the surrounding region is invaded by bike lovers when the Strade Bianche (white dirt roads) professional bicycle race is held. Again in October, the same roads are run by the vintage bicycle enthusiasts of the legendary L’Eroica, whereas for non-sport lovers Gaiole in Chianti in September holds its annual wine festival.

04 Pieve di Santa Maria a Spaltenna

Gaiole in Chianti is surrounded by tiny medieval villages, most with their own castles, and dozens of Romanesque rural churches, known as pieve. Among these, certainly worth a visit, is the parish church of Santa Maria in Spaltenna.

Nearby, on the hillside, is a tiny hamlet built around the beginning of the 11th century by the noble Conti Guidi family. Surrounded by olive groves, oak woods and endless vineyards, today this wine estate still detains the charm and glory of its past.
